One thing Nigerians will always do is adapt.
Give us a minor inconvenience and somehow, we’ll find a way around it. Give us a major inconvenience and we’ll probably find a way around that too. It’s one of our greatest strengths.
Unfortunately, it’s also the reason some of us have been living with the same annoying problems since 2024.
And before you say, “Not me,” think carefully.
Because somewhere in your house right now, there’s probably at least one item that has been crying out for retirement since January.
Yet here you are. Still managing it.
The Problems You Have Refused to Let Go Of
You know the ones.
The fan that announces itself to the entire neighborhood every time you switch it on. That phone charger that only works when positioned at a very specific angle. That blender that smells like burning ambition enough to make you question your life choices, whenever it’s in use. The washing machine that has developed a personality of its own, complete with dramatic pauses, unexpected banging noises, and a tendency to restart cycles whenever it feels like it.
And then there’s the laptop that has been giving you tiny electric shocks since the beginning of the year. Not enough to send you to the hospital. Just enough to remind you that something is very wrong.

We’ve Normalized Too Much
The funny thing is that most of these situations didn’t start out this bad. But because the problems seemed manageable, you adjusted.
Then adjusted again.
And again.
Until inconvenience quietly became part of everyday life.
You’ve learnt the angle that makes the charger work. You learnt how to hold down the washing machine when it’s spinning so that it doesn’t start over. You avoid touching that particular part of your laptop. You’ve even stopped noticing the fan’s soundtrack because your brain edited it out months ago.
The truth is, Nigerians are incredibly resilient. We know how to adapt. We even catch cruise with our problems and post them online.
But over time, those frustrations pile up. They steal time and drain energy. They make simple tasks more stressful than they need to be.
And because the change happens gradually, one small issue at a time, we barely notice how much effort we’re spending working around things that should simply work.
Maybe It’s Time to Stop Managing
Not everything needs to be endured. Life already comes with enough challenges on its own. Your everyday appliances and gadgets shouldn’t be among them.
Sometimes the better option is simply to upgrade.
So if you’ve been saying, “It’s still working,” since January, maybe it’s worth asking a different question:
Is it really working, or have you just become very good at managing it?
Because there’s a difference.
