The Smack and Manage Method: A Nigerian Technical Skill

One of the things Nigerians know how to do best is manage. There are some things we don’t immediately replace.

No sir… we smack them.

When the remote stops responding, we give it a few good taps against our palms. When the television starts misbehaving, someone reaches for the side to remind it who is in charge.

The decoder freezes? Smack.

The standing fan starts making strange noises? You already know where this is going.

And somehow, sometimes, it works. Which is probably how we got here.

Because once you’ve successfully brought something back to life with a few strategic smacks, it’s easy to start believing that we can manage almost anything.

But tell me: how many times do you have to smack your devices before you realize something isn’t quite right?

But What Is “Working” Really Costing You?

The problem with managing something for too long is that you slowly adjust your expectations and your lifestyle around it.

You learn the exact angle at which the charger works. You know which button on the remote needs to be pressed twice. Even funnier, you know the particular noise the washing machine makes just before it decides to restart from the top, so you rush to it and hold it down strategically.

But sometimes, the cost of keeping an old or low-quality item isn’t just the money you haven’t spent replacing it.

It’s the time, the inconvenience, and constant little frustrations that interrupt your day. A faulty device may use up more of your energy. A poor-quality appliance may require more frequent repairs. An unreliable device can make simple tasks take longer than they should.

And then there is the mental cost of constantly wondering whether something will work when you need it.

Because there’s nothing quite like pressing the power button on an appliance and waiting to see which version of its personality you’re getting today.

Sometimes, Quality Is the More Affordable Choice

This doesn’t mean you need to buy the most expensive option available. It just means thinking beyond the price tag.

When you invest in a product that’s reliable, durable, and suited to what you actually need, you will end up spending less over time. You replace things less frequently, deal with fewer breakdowns, and spend less time improvising solutions to problems that shouldn’t exist in the first place.

And perhaps most importantly, you get to use the product without constantly wondering when it will disappoint you.

That’s the kind of value you don’t always see on the receipt.

You experience it every time something simply works.

You Don’t Have to Manage Everything

There will always be things worth repairing, reusing, or making do with. That’s part of being practical.

But not everything needs to be a long-term exercise in endurance.

If you’ve been using the same struggling appliance for years, wearing the shoes that are clearly negotiating their retirement, or relying on a product that has required one too many “special techniques” to function, maybe it’s time to stop managing.

Sometimes, the smarter financial decision isn’t finding another way to make something work.

It’s investing in something that works properly in the first place.
