Future You Will Thank You for This

I have come to realise that adulthood is surprisingly full of purchases that are… let’s just say, unexciting.

Nobody is standing in the store aisle, holding a pack of food storage containers, thinking, “Wow. This is exactly the kind of shopping experience I dreamed about as a child.”

Nobody gets home with an extra phone charger and immediately calls their friends to announce the good news.

And yet, these are often the things that save us from the most unnecessary stress that comes up in the future.

Because there is a particular kind of satisfaction that comes from needing something and discovering that your past self had already thought ahead.

The Things You Don’t Appreciate Until You Need Them

Take an extra charger, for example.

When you buy one, it doesn’t feel particularly important. You already have a charger. Why do you need another one?

Then one day, your main charger mysteriously stops working. Or you leave it at work. Or someone borrows it and has failed to return it.

That’s when the spare charger sitting quietly in your drawer goes from “Why did I buy this again?” to “Thank goodness I bought this.”

The same goes for backup power. Especially if you’re privileged to live in neighborhoods with stable power supply.

You don’t get particularly excited about buying a power bank or setting up backup power when everything is working perfectly. But when the lights go out, your phone is at 7%, and you have something important to do, suddenly that earlier purchase feels like an act of genius.

That’s the funny thing about practical purchases. Their value often becomes obvious when you need them.

Adulting Is Sometimes Just Planning Ahead

There are plenty of other things that fall into this category.

Keeping a few pantry staples at home means you’re not forced to make an emergency grocery run because you suddenly have nothing to cook. A good set of cookware may not give you the instant excitement of buying something flashy, but it can make preparing meals easier for years.

A surge protector might be one of the least exciting things in your shopping cart, until it helps protect your electronics from an unexpected power surge.

These purchases don’t necessarily feel like major life upgrades when you’re making them, but they make future problems smaller.

Your Future Self Has Enough to Deal With

Life is already unpredictable enough.

There will be unexpected expenses, busy mornings, power interruptions, forgotten chargers, empty cupboards, last-minute plans, and those days when everything seems determined to happen at once.

You might not be able to prepare for everything. But you can make some of those moments easier.

Sometimes, that means spending a little more thoughtfully today so you don’t have to spend more money, time, or energy solving the same problem tomorrow.
