Tips That Could Save You (Or Someone You Know) from Breast Cancer

The month of October comes with a powerful reminder to prioritize our health: it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Breast cancer is a serious health issue that affects millions worldwide, including many here in Nigeria.

As we take this month to raise awareness, let’s look at what breast cancer is, how we can prevent breast cancer and manage it effectively.

What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a condition where cells in the breast grow abnormally and uncontrollably, forming tumours that can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). It can affect both men and women, but it is most common in women.

Early detection is crucial because the earlier breast cancer is identified, the better the chances for successful treatment. So, regular screenings and awareness of the symptoms—like lumps in the breast, changes in shape or size, or unusual discharge—are important steps in keeping yourself healthy.

Can We Prevent Breast Cancer?

While it may not always be possible to completely prevent breast cancer, there are lifestyle habits that can reduce your risk. These include:

  • Maintain a Healthy Diet: Eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. A balanced diet rich in antioxidants can strengthen your immune system and also reduce cancer risks.
  • Exercise Regularly: Physical activity helps regulate hormones and lowers estrogen levels, which can reduce the risk of breast cancer.

  • Limit Alcohol and Avoid Smoking: Alcohol consumption is linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, while smoking has been connected to various types of cancer. Reducing or eliminating these habits can make a big difference.
  • Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding may lower your risk of breast cancer for women.

Can Breast Cancer be Managed?

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with breast cancer, it’s important to focus on management and support. Treatment options vary, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. However, lifestyle changes also play a role in recovery. Eating nutritious foods, staying active, and joining support groups can provide emotional strength and also improve quality of life. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey.
