Living Alone for the First Time? Here’s What No One Tells You

I remember when I got my first apartment. The moment the keys were handed over to me, I felt like Simba! At that moment, I’d made it in life. There was absolutely nothing anybody could say to me. Lol.

The truth is: living alone is thrilling, liberating, and a little terrifying. Everyone tells you about the freedom, the quiet, the fact that your things will stay exactly where you left them.

But here’s what no one really tells you:

  1. The Silence is Loud

You’ll love the peace… until it’s 10:47 p.m. on a Tuesday and the silence starts sounding like a horror movie soundtrack. Every creak becomes a crime scene in your head. You’ll double-check locks like you’re guarding the crown jewels.

  1. You’ll Talk to Yourself a Lot

No judgment here. Conversations with yourself become your version of a family meeting. Whether it’s muttering “Did I turn off the gas?” or full-blown debates in the mirror, talking to yourself feels oddly… natural.

  1. Your Mess, Your Responsibility

At first, the freedom to leave your clothes on the floor or eat cereal straight from the box feels like sweet rebellion. But the mess doesn’t magically clean itself. You will definitely come back to it.

  1. You’ll Discover Strange Eating Habits

Who knew cold pizza at 7 a.m. would bang? Or that dinner could just be parfait? With no one to judge your meals, your diet becomes more “freestyle”. Just remember, your body still needs vegetables and exercise.

  1. You’ll Learn to Love and Fear Your Own Company

Solitude is a mirror. It’ll show you your habits, quirks, and capacity to thrive without external noise. Sometimes, it’ll be beautiful. Other times, it’ll feel like too much. Loneliness can sneak in even when you’re not expecting it, and that’s okay. You’ll learn how to sit with it, manage it, and even grow from it.

  1. You’ll Become Your Own Emergency Contact

The first time you fall sick, it hits hard. There’s no one to pass you meds or make you tea. That’s when you realise how much adulting is about resilience, and how important it is to build a support system. Keep numbers on speed dial. Let trusted friends know where your spare key is. Have a plan.

  1. You’ll Order Online…Alot

You want a laundry basket, your first instinct will be to check konga.com. A sound system? Konga.com. You want a duvet, Konga.com. How about lightbulbs? Konga.com. And you know the best part of shopping on Konga? Your order is delivered on time and in excellent condition. You also get the best prices you’ll not find anywhere else.

Living alone for the first time is like starring in a movie where you’re the writer, the director, the set designer, and the lead actor. It’s vulnerable and empowering and sometimes overwhelming. But it’s also one of the most transformational experiences you’ll ever have.

PS: Keep snacks. Always. You’ll thank yourself at 2 a.m.
