Why Your Back Suddenly Hurts

It happened while I was doing something incredibly athletic… reaching for the TV remote.

Not lifting weights, or helping someone move furniture. Not even attempting a backflip.

Just… reaching.

And somehow, in that completely ordinary moment, my back reminded me that we apparently needed to have a conversation.

I froze like, “Since when did this start?”

Because I used to think back pain was something that happened to older people.

The kind of thing you’d hear your parents complain about after a long day at work. Or something your uncle would blame on “old age” every time he stood up a little too fast and had to crouch back down.

Surely, I’m too young to be experiencing this, right?

Apparently not. 😭

The Body Keeps Count

Looking back, my back had actually been trying to get my attention for months.

I’d spend hours working without getting up from my chair. Then I’d move from my work chair to the couch. From the couch to the dining table. From the dining table to my bed, where I’d somehow convince myself that lying down while scrolling through my phone counted as “rest.”

Some days, I’d look up from my laptop and realize I hadn’t changed positions in nearly three hours.

My shoulders had quietly become roommates with my ears. My neck had adopted a permanent forward lean. And somewhere along the line, “good posture” became something I only remembered whenever someone mentioned it.

The aches didn’t arrive dramatically.

They accumulated.

We’re Moving Less Than We Think

Modern life has quietly made us experts at staying in one position.

We sit to work, eat, watch TV, study, and play games. We even sit to commute. Granted we have to move about before the actual sitting, but for most of us, that’s not saying much.

And then we lie down while scrolling through our phones before finally going to sleep.

It’s entirely possible to feel exhausted at the end of the day without having moved your body very much at all.

The irony is that our bodies were designed to move.

Not necessarily to spend hours in the gym every day, but to change positions, stretch, walk, bend, reach, and keep different muscles doing what they were created to do.

When movement disappears from our routines, stiffness creeps in.

Small Changes Make a Big Difference

The good news is that taking care of your back doesn’t have to be complicated.

Sometimes, it’s as simple as standing up every hour to stretch for a few minutes. Adjusting your chair so you’re not constantly hunching over your desk, or getting an ergonomic set to aid your back and posture.

Positioning your laptop or monitor at a comfortable height instead of forcing your neck to do all the work also counts. Just like going for a short walk after work instead of moving straight from one seat to another.

Add in a few gentle stretches at the beginning or end of your day, and you’ve got yourself a sustainable routine.

Because the goal isn’t to wait until something hurts before you start paying attention. The goal is to build habits that help you keep moving comfortably for years to come.
