Every Nigerian Home Has “That Chair”

You know the one.

The chair that’s technically meant for sitting, but somehow hasn’t hosted an actual human being in weeks.

Instead, it’s carrying a pair of jeans that are “not dirty enough to wash,” a hoodie that might still come in handy later, a handbag, two shopping bags, the everyday towel, and maybe even a random charger that’s been living there for so long it should’ve started paying rent.

There was no family meeting, or unanimous vote that the chair would take on that role. It just… happened. And somehow, every Nigerian home seems to have one. Some homes even have two.

It Never Starts Out That Way

The transformation is usually gradual.

You get home after a long day and drape your jacket over the chair because you’re too tired to hang it properly. You tell yourself you’ll deal with it in the morning. Then the next morning comes with its own rush, so the jacket stays where it is.

A day later, your work bag joins it. Then the clothes you tried on before leaving the house but decided against wearing. Then your favorite towel joins the pile. Before long, the chair has become the unofficial “I’ll sort it out later” department.

The Chair Is Usually Telling You Something

It quietly tells the story of a home that’s busy.

You’re rushing out in the mornings. You’re tired when you get back. Laundry is waiting. The wardrobe is full. There’s nowhere convenient to keep the things you use every day, so the nearest chair volunteers itself for the job.

And because it happens little by little, you stop noticing.

Until a visitor comes over and you’re scrambling to tidy up so they don’t notice the mess that has become your life.

A Functional Home Makes Everyday Life Easier

The goal isn’t to have a picture-perfect house where everything looks untouched, like nobody actually lives there.

The goal is simply to create a space that works with you instead of against you.

Sometimes, that means adding a wardrobe that’s actually big enough for your clothes. Sometimes, it’s a storage bench, a set of shelves, or a few baskets that give everyday items somewhere to belong. Even something as simple as a coat stand or hooks behind a door can make a surprising difference.

Little improvements like these don’t just make your home look neater. They make it easier to live in. You spend less time looking for things, less time clearing surfaces before visitors arrive, and less time wondering where you dropped your keys for the third time in the week.

And perhaps most importantly, they finally allow that chair to return to the job it was always meant to do.

You know… Being a chair.
