Everything was going perfectly for Seeke.
She had prepped all the veggies for her special fried rice. She had even cooked the chicken and set aside the broth. For once, dinner was not going to be a “let’s improvise something” situation. It was going to be a proper dining experience.
Seeke was going the extra mile. She had a vision, and she was sure her family would love it.
She went ahead to make her special peppered sauce, rubbed it all over the cooked chicken, and began grilling it in her Scanfrost gas cooker oven.
Things were going great.
Here’s Where Things Took A Turn
While the chicken was grilling, she washed the pot she was going to use for the fried rice and placed it on the front left burner. Then she reached for the cooking oil…
And her heart sank.
There was barely anything left.
It hadn’t even registered while she was making the peppered sauce that the oil quietly running out would not be enough for what was, quite literally, fried rice. A very important detail, as the name implies.
Nope. Seeke was in the zone. Locked in. Happily cooking away, completely unaware that one of her most important supporting characters was exiting the story quietly.
In case you still haven’t figured it out through the very detailed narration, Seeke is me. I am Seeke. 😭
That day was such a bummer. I had to pause the whole process and go hunting for oil.
And that was when I decided enough was enough.

The Hidden Cost Nobody Talks About
Inconvenience aside, the most frustrating part is that emergency shopping is often more expensive.
When you’re shopping under pressure, you’re usually not comparing prices or in the mental space for haggling. You’re focused on solving an immediate problem.
That’s how you end up buying whatever is available instead of what you originally planned. It’s how random substitutes find their way into your basket. And how a simple missing ingredient somehow turns into a much larger bill than expected.
Then there’s the cost of time.
The extra journey and interruption to your schedule. And depending on where you live, you might even have to deal with traffic.
What looks like a small oversight often creates a ripple effect that affects the rest of your day. Think about the mental energy spent on solving a problem that could have been avoided entirely.
A Little Planning Goes a Long Way
The good news is that avoiding emergency grocery runs doesn’t require military-level organization.
Sometimes, a few simple habits are enough.
A quick weekly check of essentials like rice, cooking oil, seasonings, breakfast items, and household supplies can help you spot gaps before they become urgent.
Keeping a backup of the things you use most often also makes a huge difference. It’s hard to panic about cooking oil when there’s already another bottle waiting.
So why not skip the emergency grocery runs from now on and save yourself the stress?
