Home Back to School The Night Before School Resumes Always Felt Different

The Night Before School Resumes Always Felt Different

I don’t know what it was about the night before school resumed, but somehow, the entire house felt different.

Even if you’d spent the entire holiday insisting you weren’t ready to go back, there was something about that final evening that made everything suddenly feel very real. The holiday was officially over. Tomorrow was the first day of school.

And that meant one very important thing: you had to look crisp on the first day of school. You  just had to.

So, you’d pull everything out. Shirt. Trousers or skirts. Socks. Shoes. Everything got special attention. There was something about seeing that freshly ironed uniform hanging somewhere within sight that made resumption feel official.

Your shoes would get their own attention too, especially if they had spent the entire holiday gathering dust somewhere in the house. They’d be polished until they looked almost new, and for a brief moment, you would admire your work and think, “This school year is going to be different.”

Then Came the Packing

The school bag was next.

Books were arranged. Notebooks were counted. Pens were tested. Pencils sharpened. Lunchbox found. Water bottle located. Anything that had somehow disappeared during the holiday was suddenly everyone’s problem.

And if your parents had given you a school supply list, this was usually when you discovered that you were missing approximately half of it.

“Didn’t you buy the math set?”

“Me? I thought you bought it.”

And just like that, the peaceful night before resumption had become a family investigation.

Eventually, though, everything would find its way into the bag, thanks to that trusty drawer that houses school supplies collected over the years.

You’d set your alarm, probably much earlier than necessary, because there was no way you were going to be late on the first day.

Then you’d get into bed. And suddenly, sleep became the hardest thing in the world.

The Excitement Was Real… And So Was the Dread

Because the night before resumption came with mixed feelings.

There was excitement about seeing your friends again. Finding out who new was in your class. Meeting your new teacher. Showing off your new bag, shoes, or whatever other new school essentials you had managed to acquire.

But there was also that tiny voice asking, “Do we really have to go back tomorrow?”

You’d spent weeks waking up whenever you wanted, eating breakfast without rushing, watching TV in the middle of the day and generally living like school didn’t exist.

Now your alarm was set, your uniform was ready, your bag was packed, and reality had settled in. And somehow, knowing everything was prepared made the whole thing feel a little less overwhelming.

There Was Something About Being Prepared

It gave you a head start.

When your uniform was ironed, your shoes were polished, your bag was packed, and everything you needed was within reach, the morning felt different. You weren’t searching for a missing sock while simultaneously trying to remember where you left your English notebook.

You could wake up, get dressed, grab your bag, eat breakfast and head out.

A new school year is just around the corner, and  getting everything ready ahead of time means one less thing to worry about when resumption day arrives.
