The Playlist That Got Me Through Lagos Traffic

If you live in Lagos, you already know this truth: traffic is a lifestyle. One where Google Maps says “20 minutes,” but you already know it’s a lie. One where you’ve accepted your fate, adjusted your seat, and settled in for what feels like a small road trip inside the same city. And if you’re not prepared, it will test your patience, your sanity, and your playlist.

For a long time, Lagos traffic used to stress me out badly. Horns blaring, danfo drivers shouting while driving recklessly, bikes squeezing into spaces that don’t exist, and that one bus releasing toxic fumes enough to have you in a coughing fit. Every commute felt like a battle.

Then one day, everything changed. Not because traffic disappeared (in this city? As if), but because I realized something: if I’m going to be stuck, I might as well be stuck vibing.

When Music Became a Coping Mechanism

I started paying more attention to what I listened to on the road. Calm music for mornings when patience was low. Feel-good tracks for evenings when work had already done its worst. On days I just couldn’t deal, I switched to podcasts to give my brain something else to think about other than the annoying feeling of being stuck.

Over time, my commute stopped feeling like wasted hours and started feeling like personal time. Thinking time. Laughing time. Sometimes, even therapy time.

And the better my audio setup got, the better the experience became. Once I invested in proper gear – clear earphones, a solid Bluetooth speaker, and eventually a decent car audio system, for when I’m behind the wheel, my traffic moments transformed. Even that random traffic jam on the Third Mainland Bridge became bearable.

Traffic didn’t go away – but my stress did.

Lagos Traffic, But Make It a Vibe

Now, instead of counting the minutes, I count the tracks. I discover new artists. I revisit old favorites. Sometimes I even forget I’m in traffic until someone honks aggressively behind me.

A good playlist has this funny way of turning chaos into calm. It helps you reclaim your time, even when the road refuses to cooperate. And good audio gear enhances your experience. Whether it’s noise-cancelling headphones for public transport, quality earbuds for walking, or a speaker for road trips, sound matters more than we admit.

Because when your audio is right, even the longest hold-up feels manageable. You’re still stuck… but at least you’re stuck with good vibes. And honestly? Lagos traffic is too frequent to suffer through it with bad audio.

The Real Lesson

You can’t control Lagos traffic. Let’s face it, when you live and commute in Lagos, you will experience frequent headache-causing traffic. Alas, it’s the Lagosians’ reality.

However, you can control how you experience it. The right playlist plus the right sound setup can turn a stressful commute into a vibe session, a therapy moment, or maybe even your favourite part of the day.
