There was something about the school resumption list that made every child suddenly become… unusually respectful.
You’d spend an entire afternoon carefully writing everything you needed for the new term. A dozen exercise books. Textbooks. School shoes. A new backpack if the old one had finally surrendered after three terms of faithful service. Maybe, just maybe, you’d sneak in a geometry set and perfume.
The list itself wasn’t the difficult part. The difficult part was presenting it.
Because no matter how confidently you wrote it, there was always that tiny voice in your head whispering, “I hope they don’t think this is too much.”
So you’d approach your parents with the kind of humility usually reserved for scholarship interviews. “Good evening, Sir,” “Good evening, Ma.”
Then you’d gently hand over the paper like it contained classified government documents.
You dared not look them in the eyes while they looked through the list. Then you suddenly became the most obedient version of yourself, volunteering to help clear the dining table and wash the dishes, quietly hoping all the good behavior would somehow influence the final budget.
Looking back now, it’s funny. But at the time, it felt like strategy.
Every Parent Was Doing Mental Mathematics
Then began the investigation.
Because while we were busy hoping for everything on our list, our parents were quietly calculating. Which items were absolutely necessary, and what could wait until next month.
Mom would come into your room, and suddenly everything you owned became evidence.
“Bring your school bag.”
“Where are your shoes?”
“Go and bring your socks.”
“What about your mathematical set?”
One by one, every school item had to present itself for inspection.
The school bag that had survived one too many football matches during break time. The water bottle that somehow no longer had a lid. The pencil case with exactly one pencil, no eraser, and three mysterious bottle caps that nobody could explain.
Mom would examine your shoes like customs officers inspecting luggage.
“These ones can still manage one more term.”
Meanwhile, you were looking at the hole near the sole thinking, “Can she not see what I’m seeing?”

Some Things Haven’t Changed. Others Have
Children still make lists.
Parents still look at those lists with one eyebrow slightly raised.
The only difference is that shopping for school has become a lot easier.
Instead of moving from one shop to another searching for textbooks, stationery, school bags, lunch boxes, laptops, calculators, and everything else on the list, you can now find them all in one place.
Better still, when the right deals come along, checking everything off the list becomes a little less stressful and a lot more rewarding.
Because preparing for a new school year shouldn’t feel like solving an exam before school even starts.
