The Day We Gave Mom a Smartphone (And Created an Influencer)

There was a time when my mom believed a smartphone was simply an unnecessary distraction.

According to her, a phone’s sole purpose was to store contacts and make calls. Maybe send a few texts. But that was it. Anything beyond that was excessive and distracting.

So for years, she proudly carried around a small, indestructible phone that looked like it had survived several generations of technology. Meanwhile, the rest of us were navigating apps, video calls, and social media like it was second nature.

Then one day, we decided it was time for an upgrade.

Little did we know… we were about to create an influencer.

The Smartphone Upgrade

It started as a simple gift.

We got her a sleek smartphone, complete with a pouch in her favorite color, yellow, hoping that a little personal touch might make the device more appealing to her. At best, we expected slightly better communication, clearer photos, and maybe the occasional video call with family.

At first, she approached the phone with visible suspicion. She tapped the screen cautiously, asked what felt like a hundred questions, and held the device like it might suddenly develop a personality of its own.

Still, she did mention that she liked the color. So we took that as a small win.

Slowly, however, curiosity began to replace hesitation. She started exploring more features, asking fewer questions, and tapping the screen with a little more confidence each time.

Eventually, curiosity turned into comfort. And comfort, as we would soon discover, was only the beginning.

Discovering the Camera

The real turning point came when she discovered the front camera.

At first, it was innocent. A quick selfie to send to the family group chat. Then another because the lighting looked better by the window. Then a third because she had just tied her headwrap perfectly.

Before long, the camera roll was full.

There were selfies in the living room, selfies in the kitchen, and selfies outside “just to check the sunlight.” Her selfie collection was growing faster than our bellies on Sunday evenings.

Soon, she had mastered angles, lighting, and facial expressions with the dedication of someone training for a photography award. And anyone who happened to be nearby during one of her photo sessions was immediately recruited.

“Take one more,” she would say.

“Wait, let me adjust my scarf.”

The Influencer Era

Once the photos started rolling in, the videos soon followed, and sharing them became the next adventure.

Family group chats were updated regularly. Relatives began receiving unexpected selfies accompanied by cheerful voice notes. Her WhatsApp status also became a steady stream of daily videos.

At that point, it became clear: my mum had entered her influencer era.

She now documents outfits, celebrations, Sunday meals, and random moments around the house with impressive consistency. And honestly, she’s having the time of her life.

What started as a simple gadget upgrade turned into a whole new way for her to connect, share, and express herself.

Sometimes, the Right Tech Changes Everything

Watching my mom discover everything a smartphone can do has been surprisingly heartwarming.

Technology isn’t just about having the latest device. Sometimes, it’s about opening up new ways to communicate, capture memories, and enjoy everyday moments.

And who knows? The next influencer in your family might just be waiting for the right gadget.
