Fun Facts About The 2024 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON)

The prestigious Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament kicked off on January 13th, 2024, and Ivory Coast hosts this edition. With 24 African national teams competing fiercely for the glittering trophy, the event promises nonstop excitement for football fans across the continent.

Here are some fun facts about the tournament, alongside tips on making the most of the game.

Esteemed History: AFCON is the world’s 3rd oldest continental soccer competition, launched in 1957. Sudan hosted the first edition with only three participating nations – Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia. South Africa, originally slated to participate, was disqualified because of the apartheid policies of the ruling government at the time.

Why AFCON 2023 is holding in 2024

Most Successful Winners: Successful past winners include Cameroon, Ghana, and Nigeria, with 5, 4, and 3 titles respectively. Egypt tops all-time with a record seven continental crowns. Egypt, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Tunisia, and Cameroon have the most appearances, with 26, 25, 24, 21 & 21, respectively.

Hosting: The event has been held every two years since 1968. In 2013, it moved to an odd-numbered year to avoid conflicting with the FIFA World Cup. Ivory Coast, however, later asked CAF to move the 2023 edition to January–February 2024 to avoid the tropical rainy season in West and Central Africa, which officially ends in June–July.)
