Windows 10 is the best operating system yet from Microsoft and it offers a lot of useful features which provides increased efficiency but it also consumes quite a large amount of system resources which slows down the system sometimes. The most common factors responsible for Windows 10 OS slow down are bloatware, temporary files and computing power.
You might have noticed that your Windows 10 PC slows down sometimes, here are five tips to boost your PC speed.
Windows 10 has frequent updates which fix common bugs that cause system slowdown so it is very important to enable automatic updates for maximum efficiency of your Windows 10 OS. If you are bothered about updates consuming your data, you can install updates manually at least once a month. To update manually, search for ‘Check for Updates’ in the search box and click ‘Install Now’. If the update is a major one, it is advisable to back up your personal data before installing.
Even though this step looks like what everyone should do normally when their PC starts slowing down, there are a lot of people who leave their computers running for weeks without shutting down or restarting, they simply put the PC in “sleep” mode whenever they are not using it. When a PC is in sleep mode, processes previously started will continue which will then accumulate after a while and cause your PC to slow down.
To fix this issue, simply shut down your PC after daily use and in the case that you can’t access your power off icon because the PC has slowed down so bad, you can simply press and hold down the power button till the computer shuts down completely.
A lot of computer manufacturers bundle PCs with unnecessary software commonly referred to as ‘Bloatware’, users also install some software for one time use and forget to uninstall after usage. Too many installed apps usually cause system slowdown especially when they are large in size. To speed up your PC instantly, simply uninstall those apps by going to Control Panel->Programs->Programs & Features->Uninstall a Program, right click on the program you want to uninstall and click uninstall, follow the on-screen prompts and click finish when you’re done.
One of the major reasons PCs slowdown is because of the number of processes running at startup. Many installers instruct Windows to run their programs immediately users start up their computers which causes system speed reduction because a lot of processes are running at the same time.
To check for and remove unnecessary startup programs, open task manager by holding down Ctrl, Alt and Del keys at the same time (Ctrl + Alt + Del), click the Startup tab on task manager and check for unnecessary apps that launch at startup, right click on the apps and click “Disable” to stop them from launching at startup. Do this with caution though as some apps are very important and should not be disabled at startup.
Disk Cleanup is a Windows tool you can use to clear temporary files that have accumulated on your PC such as downloaded program files, web-pages and image thumbnails. Simply type ‘Disk Cleanup’ in the search bar to find the tool, select the types of files you want to remove by marking the checkbox beside each option. Click “Clean Up System Files” to begin cleanup, the tool will calculate the amount of space you will save by cleaning up the selected files.
