What is International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. International Women’s Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first March 8 IWD gathering supported by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland, and has now extended to other countries. The original aim of International Women’s Day was to achieve gender equality for women although this has not yet been realized.
International Women’s Day 2018 Theme
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is #PressforProgress and the focus is on making all the progress that has already been set into motion go even further. The IWD site’s states “Now, more than ever, there’s a strong call to motivate and unite friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.” Today is celebrated all over the world with different marches, conferences and events focused on the joy and complexities of being a Woman.
Basic Facts about the International Women’s Day
i. While International Women’s Day is now largely aimed at inspiring women across the world and celebrating their achievements, its roots are in movements campaigning for better pay and voting rights.
ii. Over the past few years, Google has marked the occasion with a “Google Doodle” for International Women’s Day, changing their logo on the search engine’s homepage to reflect the occasion.
iii. International Women’s Day is not country, group or organization specific. The day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere. So together, let’s all be persistent in accelerating gender parity. As women, we should make International Women’s Day ours and strive to truly make a positive difference for women- Press for Progress!
For change to happen, there must be a collective commitment to making positive changes in your everyday life as a woman, encouraging others to use language that is supportive of women and fighting back against stereotypes when you see them.
