Apple, yesterday 12th September 2017, hosted her annual launch event at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple’s spaceship campus for the first time and announced the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the flagship iPhone X, as well as updates to the Apple Watch and Apple TV.
Here are a few things to note about the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.
…Or like Apple puts it, ‘Durable Glass’ (whatever that means)
The iPhone 8 introduces an all-new glass design and according to Apple, the camera is even better. It also has the smartest, most powerful chip ever in a smartphone. I don’t think the Android Army will agree. Even more interesting, it’s got wireless charging that’s truly effortless. The new iPhone also has a new gold finish and has glass on the front and back. Sounds slippery and scary, you do not want to imagine what will happen if it drops. The glass has an internal laser-welded steel and copper structure. Sounds fancy, but they promise it’ll be more durable. Let’s hope it is.
The new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus come only in silver, space grey and a new gold finish. The new phones are getting new Retina displays: 4.7-inch display in the iPhone 8 and 5.5-inch in the iPhone 8 Plus. A Retina HD display that’s more beautiful than ever. With True Tone, a wide color gamut, and 3D Touch. Unlike the older models that range from 16GB to 256GB, the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus is either 64GB or 256GB. About time they got rid of the 16GB. It was becoming nearly useless.
The new phones are dust and water resistant. The new models are engineered precisely enough to resist water and dust making it possible to take those underwater selfies and videos that have slowly become a craze.
iPhone 8 features a more advanced 12MP camera. With a larger, faster sensor. A new color filter. Deeper pixels and optical image stabilization for photos and videos. The wide‑angle and telephoto lenses on iPhone 8 Plus enable optical zoom, as well as digital zoom of up to 10x for photos and 6x for videos. Portrait mode on iPhone 8 Plus gets even better. For sharper foregrounds and more naturally blurred backgrounds. Dual cameras and new facial landmarking create dramatic studio lighting effects in the Portrait mode. Now, that’s something crazy.
The iPhone 8 is also said to possess stereo speakers which are more than 25% louder than the iPhone 7 speakers.
The new iPhone 8 also does not make use of charging cables! I guess that’s good news even though the Android Army will argue that Samsung has been able to do that since the S6. The new phones have a glass back and an embedded wireless system that makes for fast and efficient wireless charging. Now, you can charge with wireless charging stations and mats in hotels, cafes, and airports around the world. Just set your iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods anywhere on the mat to charge them wirelessly. The mats will be available from 2018.
The iPhone 8 starts at $699 while the iPhone 8 Plus starts at $799. They will both be available to be pre-ordered by September 15 and will be on sale from September 22, 2017.
